Prior Lake Home Adds A Stone Retaining Wall Along Staircase

One of our Prior Lake customers called us for a backyard makeover. This included a new brick patio, concrete steps and a retaining wall. A paved stone retaining wall can enhance any backyard, especially with a staircase like this customer had. To begin, we marked where the retaining wall would go and put stakes into the ground where the pavers would reach. The first layer of stone requires the paver to be completely buried for a sturdy base. We excavated the area and compacted the base. Then, we added a layer of sand and packed it until it was smooth. Next, we began laying the pavers, starting at the lowest point on the hill. We made sure each base course was level and added each additional stone in a staggered pattern, making sure that the stones were not too close. We added gravel behind the stone wall to assist in draining. The very top layer of stone was secured with stone adhesive for a sturdy finish. Our customer said we did a great job and loved the finished look!

New Brick Paver Steps for Waterfront Home in Prior Lake!

Our team was working on concrete steps and a retaining wall for this particular customer in Prior Lake, MN. Our customer wanted a brick walkway from his home, down to the nearby lake. To begin, we excavated the ground, so we could build the framework for the stairs. Then, we created the concrete slabs by pouring concrete into the mold. While the concrete is still damp, we hand-tamped the edges to ensure all voids would be filled for a solid finish. We pulled the molding away and cleaned up the concrete before it was finished drying. These concrete slabs were in blocks, to be applied in a similar way as the brick pavers. We used a herringbone design when laying the bricks between the staircases. After laying the bricks and concrete slabs, we poured sand over the top to fill each crevice and brushed any excess away. Our customer loved the finished look! You can see the finished look in the photos below.

Prior Lake Home Adds Brick Paver Patio For Walk-Out Basement

A. Pietig constructed a concrete patio for a customer in Prior Lake, MN. To begin this job, we made an outline for where the new patio would be. We set stakes at the corners of the outline and excavated the ground. We leveled the ground and poured gravel on top of the dirt. Once the material was compacted, we installed a plastic edging to lock in the pavers that would be set in place. After this, sand was poured evenly on top, and then it was time to lay the pavers. Once all of the brick pavers were laid (in a herringbone design), we poured another layer of sand on top and brushed off any excess for a clean finish. Once the sand had completely filled the gaps between each paver, the patio was complete! Our customer said he loved the finished look. Now, he can enjoy his new patio from his walk-out basement!

Why Does Concrete Crack?

Concrete is a material that tends to last, but it can crack for several reasons

Sometimes a crack will occur and it is inevitable; a contractor could do everything perfectly and a crack may still occur.

One of the most common reasons that concrete will crack is due to plastic shrinkage. When the concrete is in the plastic, it is full of water. The water will take up the space so it makes the concrete slab a certain size, but when the slab starts to lose moisture while it is curing, it will become smaller. When the concrete becomes smaller, it can create stress. This stress can pull the concrete slab apart. As the concrete is gets smaller and shrinks, it starts to pull the concrete slab apart and the concrete will crack just to relieve some of the tension that is occurring.

Settling is another reason that concrete will crack. When a home settles, it can cause the concrete to crack. Settling can effect a concrete basement, driveway, or walkway. Roots in trees can cause the concrete to crack too.

The weather can cause a concrete to crack. Freeze and thaw cycles will have the frozen ground lift up, then once the ground thaws out it will settle again, causing the concrete to crack. Walkways and sidewalks are known to crack due to the weather. Hot weather causes concrete to crack because of expansion.

Sometimes it doesn’t matter what a contractor does, concrete can and will crack. A contractor does everything to prevent any cracks, but cracks can just happen. It does not mean the contractor is faulty or has done a poor job, it just means that the environmental circumstances effected the concrete to make the concrete crack.

If you have had concrete installed at your home and a crack occurs, make sure you call your contractor. Your contractor will come out and look at the crack to determine what the cause of the crack may be. The contractor can determine what can be done to fix any cracks, but most cracks are not going to endanger the whole concrete. Most cracks are very small. Concrete cracks can be expected as concrete is just like anything else, it is not perfect.
